School history

Alliance High School was established on 1 March 1926 at Kikuyu by the Alliance of Protestant Missions, a partnership of Protestant missions, to give Africans the secondary education that colonial authorities had long resisted. In May 1925 the Alliance had dropped its plan for a medical college at Kikuyu and decided to start a high school there instead.

Its first chapel, used from 1934, gave way to a new main chapel in 1966, and the school records that President Jomo Kenyatta opened its new science block in 1970. The school marked its centenary on 1 March 2026.

Today it is a national boys’ boarding school in Kikuyu, Kiambu County. Its motto is “Strong to Serve”.
