About Shule Zote
Shule zote is Swahili for “all schools”. This is a directory of schools in Kenya, with 38,707 school pages across all 47 counties.
The site went online in 2013. The Ministry of Education had released its school records through the Kenya Open Data Initiative, and the idea was to make them easy for anyone to look up. That is still most of what it does.
It is not a government site. Neither the Ministry of Education nor KNEC runs it.
What is here
Search for a school by name, or start from your county. A school’s page says where it is, with a map when we have its coordinates, and what kind of school it is: public or private, day or boarding, boys, girls or mixed. Many pages also give staff and facility figures, each with the year it was recorded.
Senior schools have more. Their pages add the cluster and KNEC code from the Ministry of Education’s lists, and the gazetted fee schedule for 2026. You can browse them by cluster: C1, C2, C3 or C4.
KCSE results cover 2006 to 2025. For 2006 to 2010 every school is included. Later years cover the schools whose results were published, mostly national and extra-county schools. Every table states its year.
Parents of Grade 9 learners will find a step-by-step guide to Grade 10 placement.
How the best schools are ranked
The best-schools lists compare each school with the rest of Kenya in the same year. For each year since 2018 that we hold a school’s mean, we work out how far it was above that year’s Kenya average, then average those gaps. A school needs at least 3 years of results to be listed.
The figure in the Mean column is that average gap added to the 2025 Kenya average of 4.86, so it reads like a mean in 2025. A school that was 5 points above the Kenya average every year shows as 9.86. Comparing each year with its own Kenya average keeps a hard year, such as 2017, or the 2023 change in how the mean is worked out, from counting for or against a school. The list over every year we hold works the same way.
Only schools whose results were published can be ranked, so the lists are mostly national and extra-county schools.
How current it is
That depends on the page. Senior-school details come from lists the Ministry published in 2025 for the 2026 intake. Much of the rest still rests on the 2013 records, so a postal address or a staff count may have changed since. Each school page names its sources and their dates at the bottom.
If something is wrong
Open the school’s page and use its “Suggest a correction” link. If you work there, use “Work at this school?” on the same page. We check every suggestion against a source before we change the page.
Where the information comes from
- The original directory is built on school records published through the Kenya Open Data Initiative: names, descriptions, contacts and older details.
- Senior schools for the 2026 intake come from the Ministry’s June 2025 list. Clusters were checked against the December 2025 lists for C1, C2, C3 and C4. The copies linked here are hosted by Teachers Arena and Education News.
- Public-school fees for 2026 come from Kenya Gazette Notice No. 1449.
- Maps use school coordinates from the original directory, streets from OpenStreetMap contributors and county outlines from IEBC via UN OCHA.
- KCSE results for 2006 to 2025: KNEC’s results for 2006 to 2010, then schools’ audit reports, newspapers and a few schools’ own websites, each listed on the school’s results page. Kenya averages come from KNEC’s published grade tables.
