School history
Maryhill Girls’ High School was founded in 1933 by missionary women of the Sisters of Our Lady of Africa, to serve children of mixed race in East Africa, who faced discrimination in African, European and Asian schools. It takes its name from Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the hill on which it stands along the Thika–Gatukuyu road.
Soon after independence it began admitting African girls, and it later became a public school. It presented its first candidates under the 8-4-4 system in 1989.
Today it is a national girls’ boarding school near Thika in Kiambu County, sponsored by the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi. Its motto is “Toil for Excellence”.
