School history
The Kenya High School dates its beginnings to 1910 and the Nairobi European School, which then taught boys and girls together. In 1931 the older boys moved to the new school at Kabete that is now Nairobi School. The girls’ school was later named the European Girls Secondary School and then The Kenya High School.
During the Second World War its boarders were moved to Eldoret in 1940, returning to Nairobi a year later. In 1944 the government set aside land on Kileleshwa Hill for a new school, and in 1950 a hundred boarders moved into the partly built campus. A chapel was dedicated in 1959, the school admitted its first African student in 1961, and a library opened in 1963.
Today it is a national girls’ boarding school on Mandera Road in Kileleshwa, Nairobi. Its motto, “Servire est Regnare”, is Latin for “To serve is to reign”.
